KUALA LUMPUR: A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, hit the north Indian Ocean at 1.19 pm today, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said.
The quake's epicentre was located at 636km southwest of Great Nicobar Island, India, and 1,192km southwest of Langkawi, Kedah, it said in a statement.
The quake did not pose any tsunami threat, it added.
